• From Tech Start-up to Investment Banker: Jan Metzger at TEDxHKUST

Jan Metzger is a Hong Kong based investment banker at an European investment bank. He is the Head of TMT Investment Banking for Asia Pacific. Prior to becoming a banker, Mr. Metzger worked as a Management Consultant helping multinational companies improve their operations. While most of us think of landing that investment banking job, making money and then maybe starting our own thing -- Mr.Metzger did it the other way around. Confused? So are we. Hopefully, 9th March can provide some clarity. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of...

The Silent War: UNRESTRICTED WARFARE Warfare techniques have evolved. Military strategy now includes legal, economic, communication, transportation and network factors. Reducing one's opponent and terrorism added to that. These alternatives focused on non-military confrontation and goes beyond the boundaries of the usual battlefield. If you keenly focus on China's current actions, a silent war is ongoing. NEW WARFARE - The psychology of aggression LEGAL – China neither accepts nor participates in the arbitration unilaterally initiated by the Philippines and refused to acknowledge the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Even with this headstrong approach, China wins the Philippines and makes the developing country a new ally in the process. ENEMY REDUCTION - China's considered opponent, the US, is losing (in terms of foreign policy) its major ally in the Pacific, the Philippines. Germany, France and Italy say they will join China's Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The US objected. ECONOMIC – China provided billions of dollars in soft loans to the Philippines and many other countries. China also holds over $1 trillion in U.S. debt. This gives the Chinese an economic leverage over the United States. China forged a new trade route across Eurasia. The South China Sea is also poised to cover the maritime Silk road. Many Chinese counterfeit products flooded the world market, translating to major losses for big US and multinational corporations. COMMUNICATION & NETWORK – The US senate founds out that China hacked into Pentagon contractor networks 'nine times'. They also targeted personal emails of ‘all top national security’. Chinese hackers also stole tons of data about the American F-35 stealth fighter jet. This sophisticated intrusion is a national security nightmare. The Asian powerhouse is definitely winning the cyber war. TRANSPORTATION- China’s aggressive island reclamation and militarization in South China Sea is believed to be in preparation to seize control of the vital sea lane. Trade passing through this sea exceeds $5 trillion per year, with U.S. trade making up more than 20% of this economic activity. The Obama administration’s pivot to Asia is the US answer to this maritime threat. This new warfare employed by China is somewhat patterned from the book on military strategy entitled “Unrestricted Warfare” written in 1999 by two colonels of the People's Liberation Army, Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui. Damaged were incurred by the U.S. without a single shot fired. It seems that China is positioning itself to become America’s “new major enemy.” We are presently on the eve of World War 3: Cold and silent but can be averted. The action of the Philippine President Duterte in being diplomatic with China and changing its foreign policy (which the West finds it absurd) is a manifestation of a strong aversion to war in the South China Sea and Pacific region.
