How do private equity firms find deals? The question should be: “How do private equity firms find good deals”. I run a private equity firm, and I get calls all the time from investment bankers and brokers, saying, “Steve, we have the perfect deal for you!” and they try to convince me (on the phone) that this deal is just for me. But, I know that the second they hang up the phone with me, they’re calling Bill, they’re calling Jeff, and they’re calling Susan with the exact same deal. These are not good deals; these are just……deals. Private equity firms need to find good deals through proprietary deal flow. Proprietary deal flow is obtained (for the most part) through connections. Private equity firms need to get to know lawyers and accountants who could know when their clients are about to sell, allowing them to tell the firms in advance. Private equity firms need to make a lot of connections in an industry, so that when the executives/owners of those companies want to sell, they tell the private equity firm before they market the deal to other companies. Private equity firms should also make connections with other private equity firms. If a private equity firm has a deal, and it doesn’t have the capital to do the entire deal themselves, the firm might call on another private equity firm to be part of a syndicate. To get deals you need to get out there - get out of that office. Finally, you need to market your private equity firm really well. If you market effectively, entrepreneurs will know to come to you. In summary, if you’re a private equity firm, you need to find good deals. Stop taking calls from those bankers, stop taking calls from those brokers, get out of your office and get proprietary deal flow. In 2014, the yogurt company Chobani needed $750 million. Before the market found out, Chobani was already in talks with TPG. Why? The co-founder of TPG, David Bonderman, knew a prominent businessman in Turkey, Cuneyd Zapsu, who in turn knew the CEO of Chobani, Hamdi Ulukaya. Remember, proprietary deal flow is all about working the connections you have. After all, this $750 million deal happened because a guy knew a guy who knew a guy.

We have recently witnessed a rise of US investment banks and a decline of their European competitors. Should we worry? Does it matter whether European corporates are served by US or European investment banks? Meanwhile, since 2015, Chinese investment banks have overtaken American and European investment banks in the Asia-Pacific market. Dirk Schoenmaker explored these issues and more in conversation with Sylvie Matherat.

Many of America’s closest allies have chosen to become founding members of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, known as the AIIB. Connect: http://www.theTrumpet.com http://twitter.com/theTrumpet_com http://www.facebook.com/PhiladelphiaTrumpet http://plus.google.com/+Thetrumpet/posts Many of America’s closest allies have chosen to become founding members of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, known as the AIIB. The bank is expected to fund major energy, communications and transportation projects in Asia. Traditionally close American allies Japan and South Korea chose to join even after Washington’s requests that they boycott China’s invitation. And those weren’t the only ones. The United Kingdom, France and Germany also signed up despite U.S. protests and concerns about the bank’s governance. When the UK announced earlier this month that it would join the AIIB, the White House issued a sharp criticism, demonstrating a rare policy rift between the two allies. These nations are joining the AIIB to develop greater trade and investment with China. And they are willing to do so despite U.S. protests. Executive vice president of the Asia Society Tom Nagorski explains: SOUNDBITE: “The United States is or has been isolated by this. I think because it came out of gates as not really, appearing any way, to be willing to talk about all of this, but just in opposition, on the face of it, to the creation of this China-led institution.” The U.S. claims the AIIB will undermine the authority of the International Monetary Fund. It says the bank will weaken the Trans-Pacific Partnership the U.S. is promoting to bolster trade around the Pacific. South Korea has hesitated to join this partnership. The criticism turned into embarrassment for the U.S. when IMF managing director Christine Legarde assured China that the IMF would cooperate with the AIIB. The U.S. Congress has avoided approving a package of reforms to the IMF agreed to back in 2010. The reforms would give China and other emerging nations a greater say in decision making. This has given the creation of the AIIB greater momentum as an alternative bank. The creation of this new bank proves that America’s “pivot to Asia” is not working. The Trumpet has forecast the decline of America’s influence in the region. For more information on this trend, request our free booklet Russia and China in Prophecy.

(7 Apr 2016) The head of the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) said on Thursday that a "more developed Asia" would benefit the rest of the world. The China-led AIIB officially opened in January in Beijing, formalising the emergence of a competitor to the Washington-led World Bank and strengthening China's influence over global development and finance. Speaking at an event organised by a local think-tank in Hong Kong, AIIB's inaugural President Jin Liqun denied speculation that China's goal was to undercut the influence of both the World Bank and the Japan-led Asian Development Bank. Jin also said Hong Kong can play an important role in AIIB by raising funds for AIIB via bond offerings. Hong Kong has lobbied to join AIIB as a sub-sovereign member. Deutsche Bank is in the final stages of making an external appointment to lead its Australian operations, sources told Street Talk. Several external names including former head of UBS Asia Pacific corporate-client solutions Matthew Hanning were in the mix, but the frontrunner is said to be Anthony Miller, formerly a senior partner at Goldman Sachs. A local announcement by Deutsche on the position is expected in coming weeks. Miller most recently led Goldman's Asia Pacific investment banking solutions arm from Hong Kong.
